Dangers of High Fructose Corn Syrup Including List of Products

Look at the list of ingredients on one of your drinks or products. I guarantee you will most likely find High Fructose Corn Syrup as one of the ingredients.

HFCS is now commonly found in almost all processed foods, including:
  • soft drinks (Coca-Cola, Pepsi)
  • fruit juices (Snapple, Ocean Spray Cranberry) and canned fruits
  • breakfast cereals (Kellogg’s cornflakes)
  • ice cream and dairy products (Dreyer’s, Yoplait yogurts)
  • cookies and crackers (Nabisco Ritz crackers)
  • soups and sauces (Campbell’s vegetable soup)
  • condiments and salad dressings
  • baking products and baked goods
  • candy bars and gum (PowerBar)
  • jams, jellies and syrup (Smucker’s grape jelly)
  • cough syrups and low-fat diet foods (Robitussin, Vicks)

Food manufacturers embraced High Fructose Corn Syrup because it is cheaper than sucrose (table sugar) and mixes well with a variety of products, including beverages, baked goods, jams and jellies, candies, and dairy products.

Excess fructose intake has been associated with adverse health effects such as:
metabolic syndrome, elevated triglyceride levels, hypertension, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, excess uric acid levels (associated with gout), and elevated levels of advanced glycation end products (linked with aging and complications of diabetes).

Excess fructose intake may contribute to hypertension. High blood pressure is a well-known comorbidity associated with obesity, hyperinsulinemia, and hyperlipidemia

Reasons why you should avoid HCFS:
  • Travels straight to the liver where it is metabolized to fat. Fructose converts to fat more than any other sugar.
  • Contributes to the development of diabetes and tissue damage. A recent study presented at the 2007 national meeting of the American Chemical Society found new evidence that soft drinks sweetened with high fructose corn syrup contains high levels of reactive compounds that have been shown by others to trigger cell and tissue damage that cause diabetes.
  • Does not stimulate insulin production or enhance, leptin, a hormone involved in appetite regulation. Because insulin and leptin act as key signals in regulating how much food you eat, this suggests that dietary fructose may contribute to increased food consumption and weight gain.
  • Contains no enzymes, vitamins or minerals; instead, it takes micro-nutrients from your body. The fructose in HFCS is different from the natural fructose you get when you eat a small piece of whole fruit, which contains the nutrients needed for your body to assimilate sugar.
  • Increases your triglyceride and LDL (bad cholesterol) levels. Triglycerides are the chemical form of fat found in foods and in your body. Studies show that elevated blood levels of triglycerides increases your risk of heart disease.
  • Is almost always made from genetically modified corn, which may increase your risk of developing corn food allergies. The problem with corn allergies are that once you have a corn allergy from GMO corn you will have an allergy to even healthy organic corn products.
  • Corn based products such as HFCS have also been shown to increase osteoporosis, tooth decay, anemia and osteoarthritis.
  • Fructose interacts with birth control pills and can elevate insulin levels in women on the pill.
  • Fructose inhibits copper metabolism leading to a deficiency of copper, which can cause increased bone fragility, anemia, ischemic heart disease and defective connective tissue formation among others.
If you want to lose weight and drastically improve your health, stop drinking soda and processed fruit juices. These beverages are sweetened with almost eight teaspoons of fructose per serving. Drink pure water instead and you will be well on your way to improved health. You should also severely limit your consumption of food that contains high fructose corn syrup.
I advise you to check the ingredients when you are shopping.

Here is a list of products that contain HFCS. **PLEASE NOTE** This list can change. The manufacturers of these products can change their ingredients at any time. I will try to keep up with the list. If you notice a product that has changed, please contact me. If you have products that can be added to the list, please contact me. worldevolved at gmail dot com.

Thank You for this very valuable information. 20 years ago I found that I had an allergy to corn. High Fructose Corn Syrup is the one product that keeps me from eating most foods. When I began reading labels, I was in shock to find High Fructose Corn Syrup in EVERYTHING!

Great article! Given the tremendous profit interests behind HFCS, it's important to spread awareness of it's health risks.

HFCS actually can stimulate insulin production, although indirectly. Because HFCS contains both fructose and sucrose, the fructose blocks the liver from processing the spike in blood sugar that sucrose causes which increases the need for insulin. You can find more info on this in Good Calories Bad Calories by Gary Taubes.

Coca-Cola or Pepsi never contain hfcs... here in Europe. Actually, HFCS is very difficult to spot in any product here.

Anonymous said...

Yes Jarmoni that is correct it is mostly a US problem. The US at the behest of the corn growers instituted a tariff on suger making hfcs much cheaper in comparison. Further they subsidize the corn growing making it even cheaper still. It is in the US foods because of this and no other reason. Pure corruption by the govt for special interests

I hear there is a new BBQ sauce coming out this month called Chef Hymie Grande that has no high fructose corn syrup or processed sugar & has the ADA mark on the label.

RockNTheFreeWorld said...

Actually, most of the tariffs on sugar in the US are at the behest of the sugar cane growers in the US. They wish to maintain a high price for US made sugar and ensure high profits for themselves. Still government intrusion and market distortion of the worst kind.

Our son will be starting Kindergarten soon. We were horrified to learn that the school provides a breakfast of Pop Tarts and donut holes. We were horrified about all the sugars that were being given to young children. This is a diet for hyperactivity as youths, and cancer for adults.

This is a well written and informative article. I wish that this could be seen by everyone and these products would not be bought by consumers.

We are living in a world of the 'selfish and the greedy'who do not care what effect these ingredients placed in products have upon the consumers.

Consumers must educate themselves. Read more and live healthier lives by avoiding these products.

Thanks again to the author.

I have been on a letter writing campaign to all companies that have products with this stuff in it. Nobody needs this much sweetener in their food to begin with. Is the company that makes insulin paying companies to do this?

I am particularly upset with Kellogg because the founder would be really upset over this ingredient in so many or their products. He must be turning over in his grave.

Please join me in writing letters. I have gotten some very interesting replies from them.

Also don't forget about the dangers of artificial sweeteners!!

If you like yogurt, stick to organic Stonyfield yogurt, one of the few yogurts without HFCS.

Everyone should read "Omnivores Dilemma" by Michael Pollan. You'll never look at food the same way!

GREAT info! keep posting good stuff like this please!

I have to also add that This is not a matter of only HFCS but the regular table sugar. I work in the Food Industry Building Facilities and have learned that the way the sugar is process is even worse than HFCS. As the matter of fact, they both have a VERY similar chemical composition. What i definitely don't know is: Why in the world do we have to create new problems here in USA instead creating solutions? Why is it so hard to find natural products, and when you do, you end up paying more out of the pocket? I highly recomend you go to see "Food, Inc", it is a great documentary about how the industrialization of food has achieve ridiculous levels of unhealthyness.

It's truly amazing how many product this poison is found in. We consume so much sugar without even knowing it.

Thanks for the info. To be honest I didn't know much on the dangers of high fructose corn syrup... albeit knowing it carried a bad stigma.

Thanks much for posting this information. Finding it in one place saves time and energy. You've done something good. ;o)

I'm going to send it to my son. It'll help him, too.

It just seems that if you aren't rich,or live in a correct zoning area, then you can't find proper foods to eat anymore. Correct me if I'm wrong! Great article, but I would like to see a list of substitutions to go with it. Maybe even some of the substitutions have some things that are bad for you too. I just don't know what to eat anymore with out going completely vegan (God help me with that). Even that isn't all that healthy.

Jacob Valenta said...

So don't eat anything? :P jk I didnt know it caused so many problems! I wont stop eating stuff with it, but sure will slow down :)

thx

You know there's something wrong when they're trying so hard to change it's image. Now they want to call it "Corn Sugar" so it sounds less scientific. I saw this commercial a few days ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fyj2N-AspqU

My wife recently found some Animal Crackers without HFCS, and she talked about them on her website: http://realsugarmama.com/?p=63

My son has had a corn allergy since birth and he is six now. At first it was so frustrating to find things to feed him. However, ithink we have it down to a science atthis point. This article was very helpful. All natural foods and those sweetened with applesauce work well. Homemade is bestsince you control the ingredients. Be creative! There is life after being diagnosed with corn allergies...i promise. My son is doing great, growing and he is even a bit chubby. Lol. For kids some snack choices are cheez its, goldfish. Justthe regular ones, and shoprite has crackers and cookies in their organic section, chobani yogurt, breyers plain vanilla and chocolate ice cream, hagan das...see, there are choices! Hang in there everyone!
